What is a Topographic Map?
Whether on paper or on a computer screen, a map is the best tool available to catalog and view the arrangement of things on the Earth's surface. Maps of various kinds—road maps, political maps, land use maps, maps of the world—serve many different purposes.
One of the most widely used of all maps is the topographic map. The feature that most distinguishes topographic maps from maps of other types is the use of contour lines to portray the shape and elevation of the land. Topographic maps render the three-dimensional ups and downs of the terrain on a two-dimensional surface.
Topographic maps usually portray both natural and manmade features. They show and name works of nature including mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation. They also identify the principal works of man, such as roads, boundaries, transmission lines, and major buildings.
The wide range of information provided by topographic maps make them extremely useful to professional and recreational map users alike. Topographic maps are used for engineering, energy exploration, natural resource conservation, environmental management, public works design, commercial and residential planning, and outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and fishing.

WAKEFIELD, MA. – The Map Shack, New England and the Northeast's largest map store, receives hits on their web site from lovers of the outdoors and businesses from the greater Boston area and beyond. Combining a hands-on approach to customer service both in their retail store and on-line web site, the Map Shack has learned that it takes more than an ad in the local phonebook to reach sports enthusiasts. “Everyone is on the computer these days, even the old-timers; and if they don’t know how to operate the computer, they get their children to do it for them,” explains Ken Binding, President and owner of the Map Shack. “Our web site is easy to navigate and straight forward. When a customer has a question or a special order, all they have to do is give us a call and we can pinpoint the exact map they need; and...we’re easy to find!”

Easy to Find
“Our first web site wasn’t so easy to find, and not many people ever saw it,” Ken recalled. It wasn’t until a local advertising and graphic design company, WendellCenter.com redesigned the Map Shack’s web site and added search-engine-friendly design techniques; that they started to get hits from all over the United States and beyond. “Now, it’s no surprise to be contacted by someone in the middle of the ocean on a freighter; or someone in another state that needs a map or mapping product,” continued Ken. “Just the other day, I received a call from a gentleman living in the state of Georgia. He’d lived in Augusta for 11 years, and his family had owned property on Bear Island and Lake Winnipesaukee for 100 years. His father had retired there – and the son wanted to find him a good map of Lake Winnipesaukee...so he got on the internet and punched in “map, Lake Winnipesaukee” and up came “The Map Shack!” He couldn’t believe how easy it was to find us. We sent him an Early Edition map of Lake Winnipesaukee, 1909; mounted, matted and on it’s way...within minutes of his call.”

The store also has a large selection of NOAA nautical waterproof charts USCG & NAVY approved for the New England area that are handy for boaters. In addition to carrying a selection of charts and fishing books; the Map Shack also has a collection of fishing books that they publishshoeing, cross-country skiing or vacationing; you’ll find CD’s, atlas, globes, maps, navigational tools and compasses (for boat or car).
The Map Shack specializes in U.S. Geological Survey maps that provide minute geographical detail right down to elevations, hiking trails and bodies of water.
